Portrait of a Woodpecker.
Woodpeckers are part of the family of Picidae. Most of these birds live in forests or woodland habitats, although a few of these species are known to live in treeless areas, such a rocky hillsides and deserts. Puffbirds and Toucans are known to be closely related to the woodpeckers. Most of these species are predominantly white, black, brown and red. Woodpeckers have red, orange or yellow on their heads and bellies usually, as these bright areas are important for their signaling. Members of the Picidae family have strong bills for drilling and drumming on trees and long sticky tongues for extracting food.
