Message in a bottles were commonly used as a form of communication if you were stranded on a desert island to lost as sea, you could float a message in a sealed bottle to sea, and it would eventually be washed back to land by the surf to seek for help.
The first recorded message in a bottles were released around 310 BC by the ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus as an experiment to show that the Mediterranean Sea was formed by the inflowing Atlantic Ocean.
In Summer 2014 it was thought that the world's oldest message in a bottle was found after 107 years in Ontario, Canada washed up on the beach.
